Ancient Groove Music specialises in producing bespoke editions of sacred choral music, as well as other vocal and ensemble works, with high standards of music engraving, academic rigour and performability. We typeset manuscripts, research original source material, and produce editions to customers' specifications. We provide music for cathedral, collegiate and church choirs, including King's College, Cambridge; choral societies and concert groups in the UK and throughout the rest of the world, as well as leading professional ensembles such as The Gabrieli Consort and The Sixteen. We are happy to provide customized editions in different keys, for different forces, with different texts! We also do audio editing.
From now on, most of our existing catalogue is available as PDFs, free to download. We ask that you do not host them on other websites, nor copy material from them into other content. The catalogue consists of scholarly editions, from the Renaissance through the Baroque to more recent works, designed by performers for performers. We also publish books on music and literature written by musicians.
If you would like us to engrave a score (and parts) from a manuscript, or research source material and create a new edition of anything, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Editions by Ancient Groove Music are also available on nkoda, the subscription streaming service for digital music scores.
Highlights of our church music collection include an authentic edition of Allegri's Miserere mei, and an essay detailing the research is included on this site. Recent research has uncovered a fifth vocal part for Casciolini's Stabat mater dolorosa, previously published with only four parts!
A major new collection of the complete works of Antonio Lotti (1667 - 1740) is underway; this includes a cappella masses and motets, concert works for chorus and orchestra, such as the Missa Sapientiae, the Credo in F and Requiem, and his surviving operas and oratorios, madrigals and instrumental works.
Recent additions to the catalogue include Verse Anthems by Thomas Wilkinson (fl. 1575 - 1612); an English language edition of the St. John Passion by Victoria; and a reconstruction of Quemadmodum by Taverner. We also have a series of Latin Magnificat and Nunc dimittis settings by Lassus, Palestrina, Tallis and others.
We have also been involved in producing premiere recordings of some of the works in our catalogue. Unfamiliar works for which no recording exists have been given computer-generated audio renderings. Samples pages of our scores are available.
Ancient Groove Music also offers a selection of essays on music, free ebooks, including John Redford's morality play, c.1540, The Play of Wit and Science. Essays on this site include a description of the various ways in which the Lord's Prayer was set to music in Tudor times; and a study of the text of the poem Nolo mortem peccatoris. There is also some free sheet music, showing the quality of our work.
Ancient Groove Music publishes an edition of A Plain and Easie Introduction to Practical Musicke by Thomas Morley. Printed in 1597 by one of England's greatest Tudor composers, it was the first book to be written in English on the subject of music. It is presented in standardized spelling, and fully annotated with the original woodcut engravings and examples.
